About My Independent Care

The Crescent Midwife

Having become a midwife after the birth of my children, I already held concepts concerning childbirth. Training and working within the hospital system only increased the intensity of my beliefs that this was not the ideal system of care for women.

Beliefs

My practice is based on a deep and abiding belief in the ability of a woman's body to birth her own baby through information, trust and partnership.

For a light-hearted look at the myths surrounding birth, read our exclusive article by mum of two, Kerry Simpson. (You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this article.)

Philosophy of Care

My beliefs have shaped the way I practise midwifery. I feel it is important that my clients and I agree on this, so that we can all be happy with the service I provide. Before booking with me, I would ask that you read through my philosophy of care.

Individual Service

I am a fully trained midwife who has chosen to work outside the NHS. Being independent I am able to tailor my service on an individual basis meeting the needs of women throughout pregnancy, during labour and birth, and postnatally.

Continuity

I am able to offer continuity of care and carer, an important issue to most women, which has also been shown to reduce women's need for pain relief and improve outcomes.

Support

Through being an autonomous practitioner, I am able to offer support to women who may wish to birth outside of the average experience. This may include - homebirth, waterbirth or VBAC/HBAC - other situations could be considered with the appropriate backup.

Informed Choice

The emphasis once booked with 'The Crescent Midwife' is on maintaining choices throughout the period of care based on all available information.

Control

This allows you to be the centre of care and through partnership with 'The Crescent Midwife', be in control of what is happening to you and your baby.

Safe

As a registered midwife working independently, I am supervised by the Local Supervising Authority, and a local Supervisor of Midwives approves all drugs and equipment. I have received training to deal with emergencies that may arise until assistance can be obtained.

Professional

If necessary, I can liaise with other health professionals, or seek second opinions as the need arises. I am willing to work with alternative practitioners or others of your choice.
